Nav GPS Set Up for Amateur Bareboat Skipper

Hi. Can anyone recommend a set up for an occasional bareboat charter skipper such as myself. I have a decent notebook/laptop pc. Just need some recommendations for an external GPS, Nav software and wireless package for the Mediterranean and Caribbean recreational sailing.

I am a bit confused by all the budget options out there.
Basically if you are an amateur skipper like me, what do you use?

Many thanks,

James.
