New GPS Satellites

New satellites being sent up in the summer. This is the pilot program and then they will be following up with more.

Re: New GPS Satellites

Interesting, thanks.

What do you make of this:

GPS III also will provide a new civilian signal compatible with other countries' navigation satellites, such as the European Union's Galileo system. That means civilian receivers capable of receiving the new signal will have more satellites to lock in on, improving accuracy.
I've never really understood the differences between the various systems. I just assumed you'd need different receivers for each, although I know some can get a fix from more than one system.

FCC approvals for phones and other devices and also certified backhaul interoperability. The US satellites had to go through a standards body for certification so defects where one sat system was showing a different position than another system didn't happen. Also so the signals from the two different systems, which use the same frequencies, don't step on one another.

Re: New GPS Satellites

Well, since we've been through this once (August 21, 1999) already, I would hope the manufacturers have figure it out by now.
