Re: New York State Canal System Is Open

I'm on my way to the champlain canal and will return to the lake in roughly a week.
Hey Waterwayguy I've become very interested in Marine trader trawlers and stumbled across your blog, good stuff. I'm hoping to possibly pick up a 38 in the next 6 months, It would be great to find one with a totally shot engine or major issues that don't hurt basic hull strength. Looks like a nice one in RI, might be the one if I can't find a basket case. I'll watch the market for half the summer and see whats around.

Good luck. There are a lot of these boats around with teak decks that are shot and you can buy really cheap. But replacing all the decks is a lot of work. Chuck

Re: New York State Canal System Is Open

It's a beautiful journey. I took my boat to Canada via the Erie & Oswego canals back in 2002. Would like to do the trip again now that I have converted to electric propulsion. It would be a much quieter trip and a lot more fun than listening to the diesel all day.

Mike, Interesting reading on your conversion to electric. If the Ford Lehman dies it is a consideration for us, but it will probably out live me. Chuck

Re: New York State Canal System Is Open

Chuck, I read some about the early plywood cabin sides and teak decks, I hav'nt seen anything listed or advertised with these issues though. If you had any ideas or sources on project M Traders that would be great. It's possible that a few of the cheaper boats listed online have deck issues and owners are in denial, so it's not making it into the ad. Shot teak decks probably wouldn't remain teak in the end.

Thanks! I agree. If your engine is running good stay with it. When I was traveling in the canal I had the engine over heat several times because of reeds sucked into the intake after storms. I hated diving into muddy waters to clear it. Could not see a thing. With EP theres no more intake to get clogged too. Just wish I did not have to drop the mast to travel it.
