Paper Maritimes Charts, Used?

I still need paper charts as backup for the eCharts I already have for my 2011 cruise down the St. Lawrence River, across the Gulf of SL, through the Northumberland Strait and Canso Strait, Bras d'Or Lake, then along the Nova Scotian coast to Maine and south. I can't afford to spend a lot so I'm OK with used paper charts or copies, as long as they are still quite readable.

Although I see the cost factor I strongly recommend to buy new charts. You don't know if used charts have been replaced by new editions in the meantime or how the maintenance status of the charts is.

In case of trouble you will have trouble when navigating with outdated charts, even only used them as back up.

BTW: You have a nice and informative website.

There is of course a lot of truth and sense in what jens has written, but can I just point out that many hundreds of transat yachtsman have made very successful passages on exchanged charts, it's almost a tradition.

IMHO just be careful and check the correction dates as even an oldish chart can be kept corrected and servicable.

Re: Paper Maritimes Charts, Used?

Jens:

Thank you for the concerned feedback and kind words about my website! While I appreciate your concern for proper charts and I agree that you are absolutely correct, my personal finances leave me with this choice:
1 - buy a small fraction of the paper charts I need, but have those few charts be new and updated
OR
2 - buy all the paper charts I need and allow that they will not be updated.

Since I have decided to go ahead with choice #2, I will have to be even more careful, given the fact that the paper charts I'll be using are out of date. Thankfully, I'll be using a number of tools to navigate beyond the used paper charts, including current eCharts, GPS, compass, depthsounder, tide and current tables, cruising guides, other owners logbooks, Active Captain, etc.

You can update your charts quite easily...
http://www.imray.com/ also http://www.ukho.gov.uk/Pages/Home.aspx
and I'd presume you kow how to use the NOAA site...

Thanks for the UKHO & Imray site links, I did not have them before! And you're right about NOAA.

All I need are the paper charts! :-)

Might I respectfully suggest you list what you need on this forum and see what response you get. It might surprise you.

In fact on a forum like this with so many blue water and circumnavigating seamen on here, why not have a special thread for used Chart sales, and exchanges etc.

Just a thought!!

Re: Paper Maritimes Charts, Used?

I actually made my original post thinking I might hear from folks willing to sell their used charts. I may have picked the wrong forum for that. I wasn't aware of the Classified Ads Forum or the Marine Chart Services, so I'll check them both out.

I do have a full list of each CHS chart I would like. The list includes 103 charts, so if someone has charts they'd like to sell for the St. Lawrence River (downstream of Quebec City), the Gulf of SL, the Northumberland Strait and Canso Strait, Bras d'Or Lake, the Nova Scotian coast to Maine and south, please let me know and I'll send you the list in a PM or email.
