I know there are a lot of planning websites out there, and a few ones for automated tracking too.

But what if I am at home wanting to manually plot co-ordinates, time, direction given over SSB from a friend, and get from that automatically daily averages miles, estimated time to destination,

Maybe a tool to measure distance? Then be able to save whats plotted so far and come back the next day and add to it.

Predict Wind and the like do not really seem to have this feature?

At the risk of being called a luddite, it sounds to me like you want is a paper chart, a pencil, a pair of dividers, and a set of parallel rulers.


Manually plot coordinates: Check
Measure distance: Check
Save what's plotted so far: Check
Come back the next day and add to it: Check

You'll have to do your own miles per day average. Sorry.

I have OpenCPN on every computer I own, when I get positions from other boats I just plot them there as waypoints, then I can do whatever I want in terms of measurements. And overlay gribs if helping with routing. But it's all manual.

If you don't mind having a Google account then Google Maps has a feature called "MyMaps" where you can add/store points/data. Easy to put the coordinates in a text file and load them up. But none of the other automatic features you're looking for.

If you want to go to the trouble of creating a gpx/kml file then there are lots of places you can load them, including Windy. Just save the coordinates every day in a plain text file (just keep adding a line to the file every day/time you talk) and then use something like GPS Visualizer to create a gpx.

Interested to see if anyone else knows of a tool.

I’m with the Luddite solution.
It has lot’s of advantages like not having to know digital lingo.

You need some modern skills though as you'll have to be able to Google to find out what a pencil is

As an aid to memory I have found that digging out the chart with positions plotted regularly and still extant on the chart is hard to beat. A bit of pondering and a recollection of how the passage progressed tends to occur.

Lots of equations for turning lat/long points into distances between. If you give up there are Excel spreadsheets on the Internet.

Check out Farkwar. It was built by a fellow cruiser and works great with Airmail or other email reporting. Has some of the features you are looking for but its free so it has that in its favour...

Assuming this is a ‘big trip’ for your friend...

Want to make your friend happy? Buy a chart that covers the entire trip, learn to plot positions, plot his position at regular intervals on the paper chart. Then have the chart reduced and mounted. Given him/her both versions. It will be something that is treasured as a reminder of the ‘big trip’.

Erasing of errors on the chart is ok—- proves it was done by a human(oid)
