Re: Planning a transit from Block Island, RI to Barnegat Inlet, Barnegat, NJ in Aug '

Barnegat inlet is dicey at best. The sands shift constantly and the Coast Guard can't keep up with the channel movement. I helped a friend do that transit and went aground twice till we were able to follow someone, as in SeaTow or one of those services, that lay in wait for boats like ours.

On the best of days Barnegat can be tough, on bad days, it's real challenge. Down farther Little Egg is far more tame but is shallow as puddle in some places. Check your charts for updates and watch the tides.

Like others in this post, I grew up on LBI. Been thru Barnegat on small and large boats many, many times. In good weather, follow the other boats. Otherwise, no way.

Re: Planning a transit from Block Island, RI to Barnegat Inlet, Barnegat, NJ in Aug '

I have sailed the Mansaquan Inlet to Block Island 3 times. Once sailing direct, leaving in early morning and sailing over nite to late afternoon to Block Island.
The other 2 times leaving Manasquan and sailing to sandy hook for and over nite and leaving next day to Moses State park inlet and then sailing inside to Shinnicock inlet and out Block Island the next day.Only problem is Manasquan Cannel, tide can run to 7 knots, so time your entrance. I have been on a 36' power boat going in to Barnegat inlet and was turned around 180 degrees and a sail boat with sails up went right past us, they had more control than we did.
