Queensland speed limits

Now have I got this right, because it seems crazy, however I was only told this by one person, so it might be wrong?

6 knots speed limit in canals and restricted waterways for boats of 8 metres or more.

No speed limit in canals and restricted waterward for boats less than 8 metres.

6 knots or less within 30 metres of another boat or swimmer etc.

Other limits as defined by the speed signs at that location.

????

The bit that makes me wonder is the bit about being able to go as fast as you want in the canals if you are under 8 metres.... is that right?

Re: Queensland speed limits

No, the imformation given is incorrect.
Restrictions can vary, however most canals are 6 knots for all vessels and no wash. Some parts of canals before getting into residential areas have open speed limits for vessels below 8 metres.
Some areas are 4 knots.
Cheers
Geoff.

Re: Queensland speed limits

This discussion came up when a mate purchased a 8.5 metre boat second hand. He said that the previous owner ditched it for something smaller because he lives some 7kms from the "bay" and that he has to travel at 6 knots for 7kms every time he goes out and it takes ages, but with something less than 8 metres, he can zoom out quickly. Added to that, the boat is a stern drive and you're constantly correcting course for 7 kms, from left to right over and over. Not an issue when the rudder is behind the prop.
