Re: Question about Deviation and paper charts and logs

draw an x at position with the time in pencil/incase your plotter stops and need to use the hand held gps backup/hourly position on small scale chart as backup and to comply with regs/ east is least = subtract variation/west is best=add variation
it is very disheartening to buy new charts and be handed small scraps of paper with printed variation updates / much to the disgust of paper chart sellers I prefer to print current charts with the variation included in A4 from open cpn

Same with the log.

I might also include 95C in the log. If I did I would reproduce the deviation card in the log the first or last day of every month or every other month including the epoc(date the card was produced) This makes the info easy to find if the card is lost, provides legal support that you had the card and were using it and reminds you of how old the card is and maybe you should redo the card now that it is 4yr old.
I only make a new deviation card if I make any kind of reno or install that has anything to do with wires, ferrous metal, Radios or other things with magnetic qualities.

Re: Question about Deviation and paper charts and logs

Many thanks for the great question.

And many......many thanks for all the great responses.

In the last few weeks I've just completed the RYA Day Skipper Coarse [in Lefkas, Greece] and hope to bare boat charter soon in the French part of the Med. near where I live. I hope to put a combination of all these wonderful tips to good use.....thanks again.

Re: Question about Deviation and paper charts and logs

When I first learnt to fly nearly fifty years ago, I was taught the simple phrase 'variation (or deviation) east, compass least, variation (or deviation) west, compass best'. You can work out everything from that which assumes that you are working from the chart via variation, then deviation to compass course. you just reverse the sign (plus or minus) when working from compass course through deviation, variation to chart course.
