round the world....

Can someone help me with something I can not seem to find online but am sure it is out there somewhere.

I am looking for a map/app where you could enter your current location or any location for that matter

Then tell the app that you want to travel 92 degrees east for example and keep going in that direction to see where you would get to - in other words if I walked a straight line in a particular direction around the world where would I travel to and what cities would I see before coming around full circle?

Re: round the world....

Yes, there is a 3-D app for exactly what you want to do. It is called "world globe." Available from Amazon, probably. Add a piece of string (usually sold separately) and you have the solution! (Sorry to sound so snarky, but as an "old-timer" I just couldn't help myself. Have used the "globe method" myself...learned that from my location near San Francisco, we are almost exactly at the same latitude as Lisbon and the North/South Korea DMZ. Didn't actually measure the distances though. Good luck in your geographic exploring!

Its called an Atlas, available in most book stores.
A globe and cloth tape measure works well too.

PS, forgot to mention Google Earth.. it also has a tool for measuring in nm, miles and km.

Would where you end up on the map depend to some extent upon the projection system used to create the map?

Re: round the world....

Maybe I should explain a bit better.
I want to put up a post with board arrows pointing to the closest towns in my area and have it as accurate as possible. So for instance the arrow points to nearby town A. On the same arrow I want to show another major known city in exactly the same direction and how far it is to that city or landmark.
For example the sign might say nearby town "A" is 55 km and Tokyo is 15,000 km in the same direction.

Re: round the world....

Where is your hometown? From there, enter a waypoint at your target destination in almost any navigation app and "goto" that waypoint. The app will show you distance and bearing to that waypoint.

I prefer the high-tech version - a rubber band to replace the piece of string - it doesn't slip so easily.

Not if you are plotting great circles with a bearing. There is only one solution. The path will appear as different shaped curves dependent on projection system but it will still pass through all the same locations.
