RUT955 Teltonika NMEA to OpenCPN

Can anyone point me (I'm a NMEA noob) into the direction how to configure a TelTonika RUT955 router with GPS in combination with OpenCPN. The router has a built-in GPS system (https://wiki.teltonika.lt/view/RUT95...MEA_collecting). Am I missing something? Do I need a NMEA server or multiplexer in my network? All we want is to use the NMEA data from the router as input for the OpeCPN software to navigate with.

Greetings from Texel Island - Netherlands.

Hello Johan

I see you have in 2020 the same problem.
Do you have found out how to connect the Rut 955 to OpenCPN?
If yes can you share it with me?

Hi Huib,

You have to connect OpenPLC to the IP address of your router. Remind that you have hooked up the GPS antenna and the NMEA protocol must be activated in the Teltonika router.

Kind regards,

Johan

Re: RUT955 Teltonika NMEA to OpenCPN

Interesting. Wonder if someone could help with this too:

We have a PC which gets NMEA data from a Shipmodul Multiplexer. The Multiplexer has no Wi-Fi.
Still, our PC does have WiFi&internet reception from out Teltonika Rut955 router.

I'm wondering now if we can have the Teltonika router broadcast the NMEA data which arrives at the PC to other devices?
Would be great.
If it's possible, how would that be done?

Re: RUT955 Teltonika NMEA to OpenCPN

Hello Francizka,

I Try some things in my RUT955 router and it works with my OPENCPN
What I have programmed:
GPS -> General -> GPS configuration set enabled to "on"
GPS -> NMEA -> NMEA forwarding
set Enabled to "on"
set by hostname <ipadres of the pc that will receive the GPS data
set by protocol In my case UDP
leave portnumber to 8500
GPS -> NMEA sentence settings
I have switch on the upper 4 items GPGSV, GPGGA, GPVTG and GPRMC with iterval from 5 seconds

At the receiver site you have to open the port in the firewall for 8500

Remember NMEA "forwarding" from a TelTonika router can only be done over TCP/IP by means of protocol UDP or TCP. Therefore older GPS devices that use a coaxial input cannot be used.

Re: RUT955 Teltonika NMEA to OpenCPN

Hi Francizka,

The Teltonika router can only forward NMEA data coming from it's own internal GPS module. Teltonika cannot host or relay data from your shipmodul multiplexer. So when you activate the GPS to "on" in the TelTonika be aware of two different NMEA hosts in your system.

Thank you. Bummer it can not relay the Shipmodul NMEA.
All our devices have their own GPS, so that's not so important, I'd hoped I can forward all the other data (Depth, Wind and so on).

Re: RUT955 Teltonika NMEA to OpenCPN

OpenCPN *can* forward the data through the router to other devices. Assuming the PC is getting NMEA data from the shipmodule, and the PC is connected to the router via wifi (or an Ethernet cable if that is what you did)

Create another connection on the connection tab, set it to network, UDP, address 0.0.0.0, port 2000, uncheck receive and check output.

Now, another device on the same network (Navionics on an ipad or OpenCPN on an Android device etc. ) can connect to OpenCPN and get all the NMEA data. Even AIS will be transmitted to all your other devices.

Awesome, I'll give that a try. Thank you.

Re: RUT955 Teltonika NMEA to OpenCPN

Hi everyone!

I would like to share my experience with a teltonika router, openplotter in a raspberry pi and a victron venus (energy control computer) in a raspi too. All conected in an ethernet network and sharing info through Nmea 2000 and Signalk networks.

I got almost all of the variables in the Signalk server available for KIP, wiljhelm, or other apps in tablets, computers or phones via web. It's really great.

How I did it:

At the router (mine is an x50 but if they have a GPS all are fine) point the NMEA forwarding host to the signal k server ip.(GPS- NMEA forwarding) You can choose the frequency the data are sent to the signalk.
Write down the port ip to use later at the signalk server.

Go to the signalk Server (can be in a PC, raspi, or whatever)
Go to server---data connections--add
and create a new connection NMEA 183 and write down the same port you wrote at the router.

Inmediately you are gonna receive all the router deltas (variables) and if you browse the signalk (data browser) you'll see the values in real time, including lattitude, longitude....)

If you want to track the venus values you need the Victron Venus plugin.
You can put more data inside with the Teltonika modem modbus plugin (router temp, etc...)

I'm now experimenting with new plugins but with these commented there is a lot of info to share in our NMEA network.

I hope be useful

Cheers

Pym
