Sailing Directions in Canadian Waters

Hello

if you have intentions of sailing in Canadian waters, an invaluable companion document to charts is the CHS "Sailing Directions" publication with enormous detail not found on charts.

These Sailing directions are available for a free download at Canadian Hydrographic Service or you can purchase a printed version. The web site also provides a link for updates to the documents.

Fair winds

Good reminder - I have them for our usual cruising grounds but generally forget to look at them. And I don't know the area all that well, should drag them out over the winter and see what I can learn.

They are definitely useful. And it's great CHS is finally making them available for free (digitally). I think that started last year -- at least that's when I first noticed them available. Before that I had to buy them, at no small cost.

What I'd really love to see is CHS making our charts available for free in digital format. Now that would be great!

BTW, Sailing Directions are indeed very useful. I use them a lot up where I'm cruising in Newfoundland b/c there really aren't many good guides. But they're a bit cumbersome to use, and they are more geared to large vessel shipping. But definitely useful.

Sorry, can't resist:

My immediate thought when I saw the thread title was : Head South until the butter melts!

If you head south in Hudsons Bay, you get to where the polar bears are, not where the butter melts.
