Re: Sailing the East River, NYC

This project, along with at least one comment from a user, makes me think it would be good to share a document I wrote about the trip from the Middle Chesapeake to Long Island sound. It's not terribly difficult, but a bit intimidating the first time you do it. Hope you all find it useful.

“Start” in the chart refers to the beginning time of the fair current window of opportunity. “End” is the ending time of the fair current opportunity. They’re not the start or end times of the journey, they’re the edges of the time windows. The white arrow on the arc points to the time at which the fastest trip occurs, and the numbers next to the arrow are an estimate of the elapsed time of the transit from one end to the other.

To answer your question more succinctly, the data always refers to the total transits from end-to-end.

Does that help clarify?
I’m sure I’ve read this answer too many times, and now I’m confusing myself. ☹️
Do the speeds (3,5,7) represent what we hope to pick up from the river, or average speeds of our sailboat? For instance on June 26, heading east through the C&D, if I depart at 8:08am I will get a @ 7knot push through to Delaware Bay?
Sorry if I’m making this more difficult than it is. I always scratched my head for days figuring this out from the Eldridge!
Thanks; I love the app - esp since we’ll be going through the East river as well!

Re: Sailing the East River, NYC

The 3,5,7 are approx speeds of your boat thru the water. Not the push from the current. The transit time is dependent on how fast you’re going on the water, especially on long trip’s like the East River or the C&D canal.

Thx,

You do yourself a disservice. Smart people are aware of what they don't know.

Enjoy and thanks for the feedback.

Re: Sailing the East River, NYC

Thx but the self-deprecation is for my own laughter, after having a week of the Admiral’s car quitting, my port saildrive picking up a piece of contractor plastic below the surface, shutting the diesel off, limping home from Annapolis to a mile short of the Key Bridge and docking in 18knts!
Btw, the plastic sheet was 22’ x 18’. Yep, you read that right!

All is good though, with no damage and without any further mishaps, I’ll be on my way to NYC and beyond next week.

‘Nuff venting.

Thx
