Sextants from India

I have been browsing e bay looking at sextants and by far India has the most on offer. I was wondering what the deal is as they claim most come from ships at the breakers yards. How risky would buying one of these be?

you would probably get a good quality sextant,as long as it hasent been damaged,as they scrap a lot of ships there, though, would be very careful about payment and shipping.

Sure they are. Sextants usually don't belong to the ship, they belong to the navigator or navigation officer, and unless he died at sea and forgot about it--he didn't leave it on the ship.

I would strongly doubt the legitimacy of any claim that sextants were still on board at the breaker's yard and expect a counterfeit to show up in the mail.

As Atoll says, be very careful about payment and shipping. Make sure your payment is protected and refundable if the seller is scamming you, don't respond to any "Western Union only" type offers. And pick up a book on sextant care and maintenace (i.e. from celestaire.com) to learn how to inspect one for damage and adjustments. If the frame is damaged--you've got scrap metal. Anything else can be fixed or replaced, if you know what you're looking at and it isn't unobtainable.

Got an eBay URL to look at for these?

Careful, those have to be held upside down because they are calibrated for the Southern hemisphere.

Nowadays most shipping company's provide a ship with one sextant, the days of the mates taking their own sextants to sea are long gone. I very much doubt that a ship going to scrap in India would be left with a sextant onboard. The sextant and the chronometer, plus anything else of value and portable would have been saved by the delivery crew.

It may be best to play it safe and buck up for a new Astra B from Celestaire, or keep searching ebay for a local sale. If buying foreign, I'd go for one of the ex Russian Navy models before a "salvage" sextant from India. Good used sextants (Tamaya, C. Plath, etc.) do come up on ebay occasionally at reasonable prices. However, if you are a novice, you may end up spending more to have a used sextant calibrated or repaired if it's not if good shape (which is often hard to tell).

Also, you may consider the Davis plastic model to get you started in CN. You can always resell it when you find a quality sextant - or keep it as a back-up.

A well made sextant is a joy to own and use. It's worth paying for a new Astra B, or waiting for the right used one to come up on ebay.

Does that mean I need to one for each hemisphere? All kidding aside what is the deal with the inverted image on the Russian sextants and is this common to all their models?

India does a huge trade in poorly made replicas of everything. They look good above the fireplace or bar; very high above, particularly if you have 50ft high ceilings...

The sextant will work brilliantly if you use it on one of their cheap brass yachts

The sextants advertised appear to be the real thing unless they have deliberately reproduced corrosion and desilvering mirrors. Yes there are many repros for sale but they states as much. The photos provided show a good deal of detail and obvious flaws show up quite clearly. I guess it comes down to "pay your money and take your chances" and hope you don't wind up with a dust collector.

Perchance, which one are you looking at. There is a nice Heath Hezzanith sextant with micrometer, looks like the real thing (I have a 1938 model with vernier scale). Priced at £199 which is about right.
Saw a nice looking Trommel (made by Carl Zeiss) thats a good sextant, current bid is £65 seller in the UK. If you want a good sextant I'd bid on that one

Amen: A new ARES or ASTRA from a regular business would be a good compromise. They're perfectly adequate quality, as much or more than most small boat navigators can actually use in terms of precision or accuracy. No worries about counterfeits, bogus sellers, or used damaged goods. Not a bad way to go at all.

Brass from India

Hi I used to travel regularly to India and the markets of Mumbai were full of aged brassware of all types. In fact you could sometimes see the tea chests full of damp sawdust with brassware ageing.I believe that they used a weak acid mix to speed the process. Let the buyer beware!!
Cheers Rob.

Re: Sextants from India

Im happy to chime in as a former guinea pig for an Indian sextant. In a word, yes do it.

Manish Ponda is the name of an ebay seller who breaks ships in India. I followed him and coming and going from his inventory were many good sextants and ships wares while I asked lots of questions over months. Then a fine looking Freiberger sextant came along and I swallowed hard and went for it.

It arrived on time and so well packed I felt guilty for being such a hard negotiator. It was complete and perfect and he had also sold me an extra Freiberger box and that arrived with it and it was also perfect. I contacted Ponda on Yahoo Messenger and told him the sextant was actually brand new, not a mark or scratch. He said that sextants are included on freight and large ships but seldom used because of GPS. He said its not unusual to recover new ones but he gets all types.

He has been 1000% honest and trustworthy with me. We started a good relationship because I was looking for other items and he would contact me about items he obtained that he hadnt advertised for sale.

For his honesty I decided not to bargain in the future. He knows what things are worth, prices fairly and I just say yes or no. He is a great guy and very attentive and fast so I dont play around.

His name on ebay is sweta4086 and email is manish_ponda2003@yahoo.com. You can search all his stuff here
sweta4086 | eBay

Im not interested in brassware but i do see India fakes and junk on ebay. If you like brass you can ask Ponda for specific items and he will keep his eye out for you for the real thing.

To reply to another post, Ponda said that while sometimes the ships are stripped by thieves, everything is left behind, even food in freezers. I wanted charts of the South Pacific and while he has charts (because all that was also left behind), he said that most of the ships he gets plied the North Atlantic. So it appears sextants and such are not the navigators personal equipment.

What else.....with rising sales he said he deals directly with customers and so there is less on ebay. If what you want is on ebay he would direct you to the listing.

What else....oh...oh....here is something we can all use---safety items--the ships all have tons of unused life gear. He might have tons of flares, flags, vests, rafts, epirbs, etc. Maybe we could make group buys on lots. I wish him well and hope he can become a friend to this group.

Thats as far as I go, I never had any experience with other Indian sellers so i cant comment on whats good or bad. I expect there are more good sellers but they need searching out.
