Standard Horizon SL-50 Speed / Log / Temp

My SL-50 stopped working last season.
After returning the unit to Standard Horizon, they said "the parts are no longer available to fix the unit". The instrument apparently has a faulty internal component.

In the airline industry we replace components all the time, we don't just throw away the whole black box or instrument and buy new ones. What Gives?
Anybody else run into this type of non-sense? I know its an older unit but c'mon....

Alternatively, does anyone have a used one?
- Tryed e-bay, no luck.
- Typed SL-50 into a browser and all I got were used boats (with this type of speedo installed)

I already let Standard Horizon know how I feel. Anybody out there have any thoughts as to how this poor boy can get his fun meter working again?

If you haven't already burned your bridges with Standard Horizon, they have an up-grade/replacement program that allows one to up-grade to the current better instrument very inexpensively. Things do wear out you know. Has to do with the environment. Marine.

I didn't think to ask them about that option. I didn't even see a comparable instrument in their brochure, I concluded they stopped making them and that was that.

I would love to know if anyone has information on parts -- I am (at a minimum) looking for a new depth transducer & speed "wheel", and *ideally* would like to replace the whole set (depth, speed, wind).

Not too keen to make any bigger holes in the boat though!

Alternatively -- anybody know of other brands that might "fit" in where the Standard Horizon instruments were?

I'm answering my own question -- but maybe it will help someone else some day!

I e-mailed Standard Horizon directly, and they responded in LESS than 24 hours (who knew customer service existed in 2010??). Here's what he came back with:

"With regards to the depth transducer, you can still get one for your depth
sounder from a company called Gem Electronics, who can be contacted at
(800)543-6326. If you can let me know which type you have now I can tell you
what our model number was and most likely Gem has it listed under the same
number.

Regarding the speed paddle, if you just need the paddle wheel itself we
still stock that item. There were a couple of transducers that were used
with our speed logs so if the paddle wheel you need has 6 blades the part
number is XUAIR0015 and if the paddle wheel has 4 blades the part number is
XUAIR0018. The appropriate paddle wheel can be ordered directly from us by
contacting our parts department at (714)827-7600 ext.6800. If you need the
whole transducer the model number was SIA53 and it can be ordered from Gem
Electronics.

How's that for helpful, eh??

Whatever is fair, obviously I would pay for shipping. As I recall, I checked with a vendor last year and he quoted $150-$200.

What instruments do you have? Depth? and Speed? Both are shot on my Catalina 30. I should have covered the instruments, protect them from the sun.

I have a dead SL45, 4" hole. Do you think the SL50 will work and fit there?
