UGRIB Tips for Ocean Passage

I'm looking for some tips and tricks for using Ugrib. Like a few things, how do you plot your location on the screen? What I've practiced is printing the screen and then pasting it in word so I can print it on paper, but don't see how you can plot your location today or three days from now acuratly.

Another one is how big of a section do you select for the data? What lat and lon to you add and subtract from your actual location? I would think it would be better to get 7 days of info for 12 hour segments with 1 degree resolution and no rain for a large area then get more detail for a smaller area.

Do you usually get the grib data once per day?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Why not import the grib in any decent chart plotting application ? E. g. Free Opensource OpenCpn does that just fine. Plot your anticipated route on the chart and there you are...

BTW You might want to have a look at Zygrib or Airmail-Viewfax for (better IMHO) alternatives to Ugrib.

What are you receiving it with. With a sat phone I prefer Airmail. The need is to keep the file small. So I download pressure first then wind. The more days the less accurate are the forcast.
