Upgrading the Garmin

Debating on updating my black and white Garmin GPSMAP 182 to a Garmin 740/720. Does anyone know if I can use the same GPS Antenna and Plug in so I don't have to switch everything out?

Also would I be ok just keeping the GPSMAP 182 or is it being older really an issue?

Re: Upgrading the Garmin

I'm pretty sure you can use the same antenna. The NMEA 0183 power data plug may be the same (don't know). The only reason to upgrade is your personal preference or if you're planning to add AIS or NMEA 2000 devices.

Re: Upgrading the Garmin

GPSMAP 740 features an internal, high-sensitivity GPS receiver for superior satellite tracking and quicker acquisition times.

Re: Upgrading the Garmin

If you are mounting it at the helm, you won't need an antenna as the 740/720 has an internal one. This is also likely to work through most fiberglass cabin tops. GPS receivers acquire and hold fixes more reliably than in the past.

It's not going to tell you your coordinates any better than the 182 but I think you'll find the larger screen and color display will make navigation easier and safer.

Garmin just announced a raft of new products to ship in February. Pricing on the old models may get very attractive.
