iPad Pro 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB Storage (T-terabyte; if you care about how many teras you need)

iPad Air 64GB or 256GB storage
As a way to compare, those of us using Raspberry Pi 4 computers for Navigation / Chart Plotters etc get by with 4 GB Ram, 32GB storage, and 1.5 GHZ CPU speed.

Some of us use those $15.00 USB GPS dongles for GPS or have it come in from our VHF/GPS/AIS Radios along with the AIS Data

Others using the older RPI's have even less Ram (Ram memory) and less CPU speed but they still get the job done.

Short answer, get the biggest one you can afford!
Far more bang for buck going a droid

And double check that it is the cellular version so that it comes with the GPS chip.
Or just get a droid
Even the cheapest $80 tablet will usually have GPS

Re: Which iPAD and amount of Gig

I have both Android and iPad tablets onboard and would advise against Android tablets, mainly because they don't upgrade well at all. Unless you have vanilla android that is, and all the pain around booting a new os.. Been there, done that.

Older iPads work great, I bought all of mine for under USD 60 each, and they run latest iOS and all navigation apps without issues.

As others have said, get one with cell sim capacity, not just for inbuilt GPS for real redundancy but also the ability to tether with an additional travel sim when in coastal water.

Make sure you understand brightness. If you are going to use the iPad topside, like I do, you want to understand the ‘brightness nits’ of an iPad.

The older the lower, and in today’s M1 chip version the larger the brighter. Take into consideration sunglasses, polarized lenses, and sunny skies — you may or may not be able to read your device… WHEN you need to read your device. Start with your iPhone to give you an idea!

Also, WIFI+GPS models to give you the nav capability you want (I use both Navionics for automatic routing and SEANAV for AIS transmit/receive); 256GB is half what I use today but I don’t want to bump against the 128GB barrier.
