CS Gas in a Gel . . . Anyone Used it ?

Hi Folks,

Tear Gas can also come in the form of a gel so that its not wind effected and may be better for use on a boat.

The idea is that its squirted on the skin where it liquifies and changes the mind of the attacker.

Hatches above the bed mean that if one was squirting gas out at an attacker it would blow back in the sleepers face where a gel would go out the hatch and stay out. Also similar if squirted aft out the companionway etc.

Has anyone any experience with this stuff and is it useful?

I would appreciate a discussion on this only.... as I think the Mods would too.

Thanky

Mark

I would think if the wind is blowing it would still blow back in the cabin , If I was the bad guy with a guy it would piss me off to the point I may just start shooting through the boat at who ever sprayed me!

I have never heard of CS gel so have no idea how it works - but AFAIK CS is a solid (powder) that either needs to be heated to vaporize or mixed with a dispersal agent. In the training gas huts, I've seen the trainers breaking open capsules of the stuff and dump in on a hot-plate. The vapour reacts with water, irritating sweaty skin or moist areas (eyes, mucous membranes).

I have seen pepper spray (capsaicin) in what appears to be gel or at least very viscous liquid - on TV news, APEC protests in Vancouver, the police had huge canisters of it.

I haven't heard of a gel type CS- it may exist, but it seems pepper spray does the same thing & is more common.

I've been exposed to both (for training), & while I found the pepper spray had the same effect as the CS gas, I was exposed to a much smaller amount of it. In general, CS is favoured to disperse a group of people, while pepper spray is usually utilized against an individual.

I did see something about a pepper spray projectile (I think it was on "Future Weapons") wherein a paintball style projectile, containing capsaicin, was fired from a standard paintball marker. The range & accuracy was superior to a regular spray delivery of course.

Mark,

CS is heavier than air, so you don't want to be below the gas cloud.
During Bermuda's troubled past, in the late 60's and early 70's, as a fire fighter, I was twice caught up in the stuff during street riots.
Under sweaty bunker gear, it gives a whole new meaning to the term "great balls of fire".
The stuff attacks eye lids, nasal passages, armpits, scrotal area, AND IT HURTS.

I've got some CS gas with a "pissing"/single jet type action (instead of the usual deodorant style dispersion) - am hoping this will reduce risk of getting own face in wind
