Re: Debby sailboat rescue

The headline read "Video shows dramatic rescue off Florida's coast after Debby's wrath paralyzes vessel amid 20-foot seas" but should have read "Video shows dramatic rescue off Florida's coast after Debby's wrath paralyzes crew amid 20-foot seas".

Happens all the time, so you can't blame on person.

Many times the helicopter crews (CG, Marines, Army, Navy) lose folks during training exercises in decent weather.

Then there are the guys flying and maintaining the gun ships.

Both are dangerous jobs, but flying one in combat much more so.

This at my old base Bogue Field, NC along the ICW.

Re: Debby sailboat rescue

Sometimes the captain is forced to make decisions based on one crew member panicking. When the CG does a rescue like that, they take ALL the people off the boat, even against their will. The captain has the authority to call for rescue or subdue the panicked crew by whatever mean necessary for the sake of the ship and the rest of the crew. If you call for rescue, you are forfeiting your boat.

What do you do with your dinghy in a storm? I might have time to deflate mine, roll it, and lash it dot the deck, but it shouldn’t be towed, right?

Yes, deflate it and stow below deck if possible.

But what if it doubles as your Liferaft.. I have crossed oceans with an inflated dinghy lashed to my foredeck.

Thomas said he had just purchased the 34-foot sailboat for $5,000 and picked it up in Marathon, Florida, on Wednesday. He said he was sailing it back to the Tampa area where he lives and thought he could make it home ahead of Debby.

"The storm came across faster than I anticipated. I knew it was there, but I thought I could beat it," Thomas said. "I played the cards and guess what? I gamble wrong. I lost that hand."

It's about the job not the sailors that call for help.

The Coast Guardsmen sign up for this. Later in life many of them may not put themselves in that situation as a CG Pilot, rescue swimmer etc which is why you see mostly guys between 18-35 years old out there.

Training sessions many times are just as dangerous with helicopters and crews being lost.

Same with the other services including the Marine Cobra Helicopter Gunship Pilots.

Re: Debby sailboat rescue

Photo is of Tammy Oldman's boat that went through Hurricane Raymond (Cat 4) in 1983.

After the hurricane passed and she came to, she sailed it on a jury rigged sail for 41 days to Hawaii.

She was very lucky as were the crew that survived Hurricane Debbie

The most impressive part about afrift is she navigated to Hawaii. When talking about crossing oceans Hawaii isn't that large. If her sextant skills had been less polished she could have been going the right way and just gone right past Hawaii which would have been a death sentence.

Today not sure most sailors would survive in that situation. Hopefully they have an EPIRB and PLB but lets assume they were somehow destroyed.

Re: Debby sailboat rescue

Engine failure, steering cable broke, hurricane approaching . . . experienced sailors? Did anyone do a shakedown sail/safety check after purchase on critical systems before departure? Was it a prudent decision to depart ASAP to beat the oncoming hurricane? Thankfully their boat didn't drift into the shallows along the coast . . . it would have been a different ending.
