Re: Do you have a Liferaft?

Always had one, always had it current, never needed it…. and glad! While needing it is indeed a very rare occurrence not having one when it is needed seems serious enough to me to always ship one on passages.

Re: Do you have a Liferaft?

No requirement here - never had one.

But only coastal use (albeit where I think a liferaft is of most use!) and always have a rubber Avon floating around........that mostly for when at anchor / on a mooring so if boat sinks / catches fire then have somewhere to go - that I can also use to self rescue (row ashore!). Given that the boat spends 90% plus of it's time (in my case - very much plus for wayyy too many years!) not on passage then something that works 90% of the time is good enough for me. Of course one day I could go glug on passage - but sh#t happens.

Re: Do you have a Liferaft?

We had a variation of the inflatable dinghy / life raft. We had a tinker tramp. When not rolled up ready to be a raft, we used it as a dinghy. Motor, row and sail. When we took longer trips we had it rigged like a raft ready to inflate with C02. It had a canopy as well as ditch bag equipment. The nice thing was that since we used it all the time, it didn't need inspection.

We had it for just about 13 years and it's since been retired. Given the family situation now, I'll probably go with a 4 person valise and my RIB.

Re: Do you have a Liferaft?

There's another thread started earlier today about a news report of a coastal sailor on a 28ft boat that sank off NC who's probably very glad today that he was rescued by the coast guard from his LIFERAFT. You just never know when one might come in handy.
