Re: Do you pee over the side?

The low spot in the hand rail provides just the clearance needed to avoid a certain 'interference'.

Do you pee over the side?

Just pee in a Gatorade bottle, dump it later.
I have a plastic bottle designed just for that for use in aircraft, it's shaped funny because you can't stand up in most aircraft, but on a boat a Gatorade bottle is fine.
Dock way back when Military aircraft had pee tubes that were connected to the outside where a Venturi was mounted, it made a suction of course, but also pee is very corrosive so that was stopped long ago. Tube was a black, very thin and long funnel. I used to keep one on my desk, a lot of people would pick it up turn it around looking at the thing and then try to play it like a musical instrument, thats when you would tell them what it was .
Pilots now carry an odd shaped bad with s sort of sponge in it, so it's not a bag full of liquid.

Dry suit diving, we wear a catheter connected to a valve in the suit. Females wear a she-pee, seriously, you can't make that up.

Re: Do you pee over the side?

Why not just buy a plastic hospital urinal. Cheap, clean, comes with handle, seals. Then just a simple emptying in restroom once at dock. That way you do not risk falling overboard or not complying with laws.

No you're not.

Rules for men peeing over the side on my boat (when underway).

1. Only in daylight hours
2. Only when there is another person on deck
3. Only in fair weather
4. Spare arm wrapped around the backstay/sidestay
5. If none of the above, go below and "sit" on the head (no standing up at the head when sailing or in lumpy conditions.)

I've always done this. And, why should you not?

Of course I'm not going to pee in front of guests, or the ladies, but usually I'm alone, or with just my kids. [The kids are all sons, right?

I recently asked a sailing friend who also has his own boat, and he always goes below to the head, no matter what.

So, am I the only one? No, of course not.

I live/sail on Lake Ontario, where holding tanks are required and used by all vesels. Its not a monetary thing, but by peeing overboard, I only need to pump-out once a year. Also, when I'm alone, leaving the deck, even for a minute, is a bad idea. Wondering if your sense of entitlement is getting the better of your good judgment.

And what about if I'm anchored and swimming. Is it ok to just pee while I swim? Am I supposed to get out, towel off, and go to the head like I'm at a public swimming pool? And by extension...what about #2 ? What do you think?
Like a lot of other things, it is really your decision to make, and it is impossible to successfully defend overboard discharge of any sort on this forum. However, you are in a freshwater lake which a lot of people depend upon for their water supply, rather than the ocean, where the chemistries are different. I am not a sewage expert, by any means, but I would imagine that faecal contamination is more of a problem than urine--but I don't know about freshwater lakes, except that such features which have occurred naturally would take a very long time to become clean again if overloaded. In the past, our family experienced staphyloccus skin infections after swimming in waters we did not know were contaminated. A brief course of antibiotics cured it for all of us.

What should you do? Mon, you decide, you can always change the decision.

I do agree it is not about the pumpout fee, that one's a real red herring, as is the legal issue. You understand the intent of the law, i'm sure. We decide to obey or disregard laws. You decide how far your personal responsibility goes, here.

Re: Do you pee over the side?

But but but....what if you're old and your bladder is shot and you pee straight down? Isn't it EXTRA hazardous to hang on to a shroud and lean WAY over so you don't piddle on yourself?

Hey....just addressing a conundrum brought up by our beloved Boatie!!!!
