As per snopes, US government agencies have stated that the diluting effect of the Pacific would make the level of water-borne radiation reaching US shores to be undetectable. I tend to believe it. Given how alot of wildlife is positively thriving around Chernobyl, I don't expect that Fukushima radiation would be causing any measurable effects to wildlife on US shores.

I'm thinking an embargo on Japan like the one on Cuba would get things corrected pretty fast.....
Um, the 60+ year embargo on Cuba has done ... what exactly? Other than shuttng Americans out of Cuban beach resorts, and Cuba being unwilling hosts to a US naval base and "resort"?

Anyway, as nations go, the Japanese have proven to be pretty effective at recovering from big disasters - their recoveries and rebuilding from previous earthquakes is inspiring. I'm not that worried about Fukushima.

Re: Fukushima

Here's a timely article about radioactivity discovered on a California beach:

Half Moon Bay Beach Radiation Not From Fukushima, Officials Say - Around Town - Half Moon Bay, CA Patch

This beach has at least 3 times the background radiation, and its coming from the sand. The article says that the radiation source has been identified as naturally occurring Thorium and Radium, not Cesium which would be the dominant source of the activity from Fukushima these days.

The only man-made nuclear material around that I'm aware of is rumored dumping of radioactive waste near the Farallon Islands, which are 25-30 miles up-current. It would be interesting to sample other beaches in the area to see how widespread the elevated radiation is.

Before you start running for the hills, (which BTW are usually more radioactive than the beaches) the levels on the beach are typical of what you would get at 30,000 ft in an airplane.
