LOL, and definitely cross Barcelona and Naples off your list of Western Europe 'safe' places!

One tip I picked up from a wizened cruiser is to leave two pairs of mens' sandals, different sizes, obviously visible near the logical boarding place. It won't work at anchor (no dinghy present if you are not there) but it can be effective at dock.

in many countries we visit, mace / pepper spray is just as illegal as firearms.
