Jim Bouygues Life Ring Rope Replacement

Has anyone replaced the rope and nylon straps on one of these? How did you do it and what did you use? I am curious about the final outcome. The previous owner of my boat never brought it in and the rope is falling apart. All else is good though. Thanks.

If I did this right, a photo should be added.

Ah-ha! Now I know what you mean. Glad you provided the picture, because I was thinking more along the lines of a heaving line replacement...

Sorry, Wild, I've never replaced straps/lines like those.

Best of luck!

Re: Jim Bouygues Life Ring Rope Replacement

Wow! I haven't seen one of those since the '70's, except of course for decoration!

I looked up Siren 17, nice trailer boat with a cuddy cabin. Not sure where you'd mount one of those, but modern usage is to have throwable seat cushions on a boat (required in US by USCG) in addition to one life jacket per person aboard.

If you really want to repair the life ring get a canvas shop to replace the 4 straps & the line going around the ring, might cost more than a new one. Or just pull out the old line & thread in a new line with a splice or knot to finish it.

This type of ring is normally used with about 50 ft. of line to enable pulling the ManOverBoard back to the boat.

Hope this helps & the Siren sure is a cutie!

Lol. I need to change my boat list. I bought an Allied Seawind 30. The siren would look goofy.

OK, it now makes more sense!! But I still think the Siren is a real cute boat!

Now you have a stern rail to mount the ring or a new LifeSling on. The rest of my post above is still OK, so do as you think best.

I replaced mine with left over Dyneema from lineline replacement with end to end splice. Straps to ring were still good. New Dyneema is easy to splice. Plenty of YouTube videos show spicing Dyneema and measurements you need to know.
