Re: PFD's?

As you can see there are as many suggestions and ideas about lifejackets as there are sailors! Much depends on the type and size of boat, where and when you sail, etc. Why not get a reasonably priced inflatable for the course- they can be had for less than $100, something comfortable that you can wear without worry. Then once you know have a better feel for wearing an inflatable and are settled into your boat and cruising area you can upgrade if you want. It can't hurt to have an extra one onboard anyway!

I tend to think this way but would go even further. Just go get a decent looking $40 Class 2 vest type PFD for your class. Save your money for later to get a good PFD for yourself. Keep the Class 2 around for when you have a lot of guests aboard or for a beater dinghy PFD.

Re: PFD's?

I'm a Mustang inflatable PFD with built in harness. It's comfy, weight isn't an issue and being one unit it's less to put on and off when leaving/entering below deck. CF has seen me say it ad nauseum, as a solo sailor I clip in on deck 24/7, day or night, good weather or otherwise. Twice. I run 2 lines.

I got me some new boat-person type shoes too, so mama don't need to worry none about me needing any.

Re: PFD's?

Another vote for the PFD’s with built in harnesses.
Mine are Mustang.
I wanted harnesses for crew.
Cost wise the PFD with included harness was only a few bucks more than a harnesse.
So I bought PFDs.
My prime desire, We have harnesses.

I also have my old Henri Lloyd outfit with built in harness. It had floatation but wasn’t approved as PFD.
It was my first sailing purchase. I saved up for it, I was very envious of the skipper I sailed with who had one.
Sailing is much more enjoyable when you are warm and dry.
Unfortunately, jackets with built harnesses do not appear to be available now.
The PFD’s with harness appear to be the best option available.

<--- Notes carefully that a certain mod HAS A BOAT while this wannabe boaty-type-person only has shoes...

Re: PFD's?

Add a crotch strap to the inflatable pfd if it does not have one already.

My inflatable also has a pouch with a flashlight and rigging knife. I replaced the cheap whistle with a Fox 40 and I have a personal AIS installed inside the pfd.

This PFD comes with a single crotch strap stored in a handy-dandy little zippered pouch on the back cleverly located right where you can't get to it with the PFD on.

I still haven't armed it yet. Maybe later today I can get into it.

Odd? I bought mine ready to go. Nothing more required than putting it on.
Annual check, manual inflate, rearm when expired. ect.

Re: PFD's?

You made a good decision to get your own PFD and Harness.

You never know when you will get an opportunity to go sailing on someone else's boat. Keep that PFD and harness in your duffle bag and always take it when you go on a boat.

Next, you'll need to get FWG appropriate for your area. Maybe a light duty set for now, but at some point a good set of bibs and jacket should be in that bag as well.

Generally I shake my head about people who buy all the gear for a new sport before even getting into it, but the PFD is an exception and a light duty FWG is as well.

Re: PFD's?

OK, I know I am the outlier on this one too, and I think the auto-inflate PFD and harness is a good choice, but I am happy with my old PFD vest from river guiding days. On river trips we wear them all day long, even when it's hot, and, sure they are a bit bulky, but mine is comfortable, carries a knife, whistle and PLB and I can swim in it, which I count as a big plus. I put my harness on underneath it and the ring is accessible out the front of the vest. Most PFDs give you a lot of flotation, maybe even 45 lbs! But the majority of that is over your chest so that you'll float chest up. And that means most, or all, of your body has to be submerged before the flotation takes full effect. Whatever you have, try it out so you'll know what to expect before you ever have to use it. Just another perspective.
