Real Mayday? Father and three kids Kennebunkport ME

Sound like they just called off the search. this guy doesn’t sound like he’s battling to stay afloat near a flipped over john boat does he? So weird.

Re: Real Mayday? Father and three kids Kennebunkport ME

Some people are able to stay extremely focused in an emergency, and will come off sounding so calm that they seem almost bored. I used to work as a security guard, and once had a call from the paint room in the factory where I worked. They had had a small explosion that led to a fire. The alarm in the guard shack went off at about the same time as the call came in. The guy who called it in sounded like he was going to fall asleep before he finished telling me what was happening, but he got me all the information I needed, clearly and concisely, and without any need for me to ask him to repeat himself.

Afterwards he told me that it was the most frightened he had ever been in his entire life. You really can't judge how scared someone is by the sound of their voice. Especially, I think, if they have considered ahead of time what they will need to do in an emergency, and have a script in their head of what they need to say.

It is part of the job of any captain to stay outwardly calm. If you sound panic stricken then all the others on your boat will start panicking too. Even when freaking out it is imperative to maintain a calm exterior.

Assuming he was in cold water, he may not have been real perky too.
I hope it was fake, other wise I doubt they survived, at least the bodies should be found.

Doesn't sound like it would have helped. The search was called off. Adrenaline is a bitch - doesn't tend to lend people control of their impulses on certain occasions.

Everyone has their limits. I'm a professional captain who regularly drills emergencies but if I was in the water with my dying kids I don't think I'd sound like I was making a call from my office phone. Fingers crossed that's the case.

Has anyone verified it was a real call? The folks are known and missing?

I’m leaning towards hoax myself, based on nothing has been found and search called off. With kids in the water, I don’t think the USCG would call off a search for quite some time.
Assumption that it was a hoax is also because the news hasn’t brought out the grieving Mother / Widow like they usually do.

As a kid we often fished in the gulf in what we called the “flats” which is the big bend area of Fl in small boats, not Jon boats, but certainly 14 to 16 ft boats, way offshore.
Now that isn’t open Ocean either, but I’d say that 16’ was the average size fishing boat. 20HP was a BIG motor, most ran 10’s.
That was before the 9.9 silliness.
