Re: Safety and Cruising

Yes, if I used the word "yacht" to describe my boat I would definitely feel pretentious and snobby.

If asked I usually just say I have a boat, or "I was down on my boat," or "I need this for my boat." If pressed for further info I'll tell them its a sailboat. And if they want to more, well, I'm sure we can all speak eloquently about our true loves !

It's just language, depends where you are. Up a muddy creek in the East coast of England no one would blink an eye if you called your corabbee 21 a yacht. You'd have to step over the people laughing on the floor if you referred to yourself as 'Captain" Joe Blogs in the yacht club bar(which would probably just be a shack anyway) though, no mater what size you have moored up outside or bits of paper you have. Lots "Yacht clubs" tend to be like small self help groups running on a tight budget.

Doubt if I've spent much time in what you think of as a 'club' either

Though people are people, no way you can tell from a blazer, blue ensign or oily overalls.

Same with anchorages, nice rich western country mooring can be much dicier than way off the beaten track.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._homicide_rate

mexico and usa not far apart on this listing.
does that reinforce fear of danger in mx or reaffirm your desire to travel south
kinda reinforced my lack of desire to sail to africa.

by city....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...by_murder_rate

my only club is my louisville slugger with heavy stainless gaff.

....
Odd conclusion to come to from the data you linked to. Murder rate per 100,000 population
Mexico 16.35
USA. 4.88

And few others in cruising destinations
Bahamas. 29.8
US Virgin Islands 52.6
Madagascar 0.62
South Africa. 34.7

Re: Safety and Cruising

The reasons I provided the data on top 25 countries with the highest murder rate per capita was two fold.

1. It is not about guns, but murderous intent.

2. The Caribbean, (an iconic cruising destination) has a number of countries in that top 25, as does the surrounding areas

Asking yourself.. Why?.. will provide you with a very good insight into what factors contribute to increased risk

which shows that same stats ar eused inmany different ways. number 89 and 92 are only a few positions apart.... yet the rest of theinfo is otherwise, isnt it, however.,.. realistically , mexico is safer for turistas than usa is for citizens.

Uh, no.
That is not the question.
Not for me anyway.
The murders in south Chicago don't affect my travel plans.
I don't want to cruise in my home country, the USA.
I'm much more interested in exploring the Sea of Cortez like John Steinbeck.
That lovely little gulf with the occasional square waves and sleeping whales is in the country of Mexico.
The question then becomes, how "safe" is Mexico for American visitors compared to my other non-USA choices.
The answer is: LEAST safe of all places abroad. (see Forbes article)
(Still going back, though. LOVE me some Mexico.)

Hi Zee
to compare honestly those murders need to be per capita... ie the same number of people for the same time frame.

Sea of Cortez is awesome. Come see Steinbeck's stomping grounds. Been here a couple years, haven't been killed once.
