They Had the Gall to Take my Gall Bladder !

two weeks ago had a bad stomach ache.
Then that Sunday the ache was really bad with upchucks.
Monday felt fairly good and went to work. That ache came back and ended up going to the ER at 1500. They did a sonogram and found thousands of Gall stones in the GB
They kept me. Fed me poorly. No I don't consider a liquid meal being fed.
Tuesday they ran a TV Camera down my gullet to check the stomach.
Wednesday they took me to the OR in the early AM and ripped out my Gall Bladder.
Got released Saturday with restrictions. Loads of restrictions.
Still have pain from the Operation but am in some what of fairly good health.

Sucks when they cut you open and start removing organs. Get well soon.

Then it kind of makes you wonder what it's there for in the first place.

In China the Gall Bladder from a bear is highly prized for use in traditional Medicine.

You might want to check E-bay

Were they able to go in through a couple of small incisions (laparoscopic?)

If so you were VERY smart to do it now and get it over with. Your recovery will be swift.

If you don't do it when they can do it that easily, and you let that gallbladder get infected, then they can't do it that way.

Then they rip you a REALLY big hole, and they have to move lots of organs out of the way to get to that gallbladder. Well, guess what. Your internal organs know they're not supposed to be touched, and then EVERYTHING hurts -- a lot.

You can always get a second opinion although "thousands of stones" doesn't sound good!

Hang in there. You'll be better soon and you saved yourself a very long and painful recovery from the "brute force" surgery.

No. It's just that the problems now outweigh the benefits. Did you know that they've actually discovered what the appendix is supposed to do? It provides needed helpful bacteria for the digestive tract.

That is, until it starts growing bacteria that will kill you unless it comes out ...

It's a bacteria factory. Good, bad -- it's all the same to the appendix. It doesn't care.

I heard something about this in the last week or two. A guy at work talked about having his removed. Now, anytime he eats anything, it goes through him quickly.

I'm sure one of these days I'll end up having something taken out.

Re: They had the Gall to take my Gall Bladder!!

the gall bladder is only for storage of bile which is produced in liver. the ductus from gall bladder goes into small intestine. after gb removal(cholecystectomy), in many cases thee is no ductus remaining for transportation of bile to small intestine, and the individual must not eat fats, as bile is the digester for fats.
when the stones make pain is when there are some blocking ductus. then there is a hot burning pain from one side of diaphragm to the other-- hurts like hell. that is when the md decides to do his deed. the open surgery of which rakuflames wrongly describes--nothing is ever RIPPED out of the body--is manipulated and excised with blood vessels stitched and the area cleaned of debris , not ripped, does have a longer recovery period. gallstones do not cause infection unless one rips the ductus in which it lodges. that is rare.
boaty--m.o.m. doesnt touch this pain, i promise.

good healing, boasun--may you have a smooth sailing path thru life.

WORK was your first mistake--most of us haven't made that one in years...

You also didn't give the relatives enough notice--when got released from the hospital (hit cardiac reef and had a bypass) a week before Thanksgiving the ENTIRE family showed up at my house for the feast.

The Admiral had gall bladder attacks for a few years, but daily doses of apple cider vinegar seems to have solved the problem, along with a hot water bottle to relieve the pain when they did occur. Of course, the surgeons wanted to cut it out, as an infection at sea would be serious. I almost diverted to the Cape Verdes once, but she got better and I figured her chances on the boat would be better than in a CV hospital.

Interesting reading on the internet about gall bladder attacks. Most victims are FFF (fat, female, and over forty). Most stones are pure cholesterol, and many attacks are triggered by rapid weight loss and/or cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Get well soon!
