All electric galley: bread machine

The bread machine is one of the most used appliances for us. Every week we use it to make dough for 16 rolls which we parbake and we bake a multigrain loaf.

The gold standard is the Zojirushi Bakery Supreme. We bought this in January 2007, got a new pan and paddles in 2012 after finding the non-stick was damaged after experimenting with sweet breads, and still going strong today. It’s still so popular that it’s often sold out.

Today I measured energy consumption for the dough program. 2 lbs of dough cost 30Wh of energy. That is less than 3Ah.

I will add energy consumption for the whole wheat bake program later this week.

Re: All electric galley: bread machine

not had much luck with electrics in the galley i'm afraid, after spending the last few months hiding out up a river in isolation, i thought i would test out the brand new micro wave oven which worked great off of the inverter when i used it the first few times, however after a few days of rain ,cold and quite a bit of condensation inside the boat, the microwave when i used it decided to emit a blue flash and let out it's blue smoke, most probably from condensation on the circuit boards in the innards

Yes that is a risk. You can do something to prevent that: buy a can of electronics conformal coating and spray the circuit boards. Don’t spray anything that needs to move though

I tested my bread machine for a basic 2lb loaf baked: 330Whr.

Can you add brand and model of your machine? Great to compare. Also, one or two paddles?

1 paddle.
Black & Decker
Don’t know the model.
$5 at a garage sale a year ago so it’s probably 20yr old.

For those not familiar, "dough program" does not include baking, just mixing and proofing.

I haven't measured but that is what I would expect from my aged Panasonic.

Re: All electric galley: bread machine

I can’t imagine newer machines using significantly less energy.
A more efficient motor would only trim from the power used to mix. Save 20% on mixing and that’s a savings of 6Whr so a total of 324Whr.

To save energy on baking one could take apart the machine and add rock-wool insulation between the inner and outer walls but run the risk of overheating electronics since the machine is designed with a certain amount of heat loss in mind.

Re: All electric galley: bread machine

I actually have two of these Zojirushi’s: one is 8 years old and the other 13 years. I don’t think energy consumption will be different but I’ll add that to the test results

Re: All electric galley: bread machine

I have a Home Bakery Virtuoso® Plus Breadmaker that my wife bought with Amazon points. We don't have a boat yet but thank you for letting me know I can make bread on my future boat.

I am going to experiment with it making pizza dough.

Re: All electric galley: bread machine

I would check the 30 watt hours. My bread maker uses far more than that. A loaf of bread, if one ignores the pre-warm, the rest and the two mixings, uses 500 watts in the baking element for 40 minutes. that is approximately 450 watts for that one hour proportionately. A smaller loaf would be less though.

If you are just mixing the dough and using propane to bake it, that is a different thing altogether, but if your inverter is 3 or 4kw or so output and your battery bank capacity is sufficient, baking bread or electric cooking should not be a problem in an electric galley. Some vessels have no propane at all aboard. Hot water can be solar or electric solar.

Having said that, I baked bread using shore power or a gen-set, and my cooking and hot water was propane. Primitive.

That 30Wh was just for the dough.

All the actual tests I've seen agree on between 300 and 400Wh for a "standard" loaf. The commonly quoted "Which" tests give an average of 340Wh.

Let me guess: you bake it in a solar oven using the Sun’s free energy? Kudo’s to you
