Any experience using apple’s satellite messaging ability for emergencies and basic messaging when out of cellular range?

My only observations have been on land, and I think when only location sharing was available:

1) Not able to get a message out in a redwood forest (should be better over water).

2) Needed to first share my location with the recipient whilst I still had normal internet.

From a peek online, it looks like for messaging you may similarly need to pre-designate who can send messages to you.
