Recommend a book on splicing?

I am looking for recommendations for a book on splicing. I used to be pretty good at splicing 3-strand but have no experience splicing anything else.

Thanks!

He passed away this past weekend. Sad.

I would recommend Sampson Splicing Manual. It’s the most complete book on splicing that I’ve found.

Not a book, but this site is useful - https://www.animatedknots.com/

Samson's website covers most splices and features pdf downloads of instructions

Another plus to Brion Toss's books is that he explains the principles, not just the techniques.

Re: Recommend a book on splicing?

I use both the Samson splicing book and Animated Knots. I use The Arts of The Sailor for decorative stuff. And, of course, You Tube for tutorials on specific splices - it helps me to know how and where to hold on to stuff as I'm splicing.

Brian Toss

Hervy Garret Smith "The arts of the sailor" which is a great book to read and have aboard as a reference anyway.

Ashley Book of knots is also good, but not as entertaining as Smith or Toss.

I strongly agree with this recommendation. And splicing double braid is the big challenge in any event.

Re: Recommend a book on splicing?

You did specifically ask for a book, and I normally hate it when people come into a thread and don't answer the OPs question, but in something like animated knots, and premium ropes (now free) app, have been a lot better for me than Toss' book which (no disrespected to the late author) looks like it is from antiquity, in some kind of bible font with difficult to follow wordings and lacking in modern diagrams.

The Sampson rigging manual is your best bet along with good old YOUTUBE. You can find videos of all the splices.

Yea, I like that i can take my phone up on deck with me and use the app if I need to use a new knot in-situ.

Another vote for the premium ropes app or their videos to get you started : https://www.lijnenspecialist.nl/spli...films-splitsen

PS : they also have a book but haven't used it myself.

Re: Recommend a book on splicing?

I always come back to Royce's "Sailing Illustrated". Though not "A book on splicing" it contains very detailed steps ending with " "Have a cocktail or sasporilla" . Much usefull info and amazing illustration. Hmmm...
I still remember vividly my first halyard splice...and the way it jammed fast in my masthead sheave.

Regards

Captmikem,

If you liked “The arts of the sailor” check out “The Marlinspike Sailor”. It’s my favorite knotting book of all time (& I have a few). Of course Ashley’s is the Bible of knots but Hervey Garrett Smith knew how to apply knots to create great projects. I’m still using this worn out book for over 20 years. It’s the one book that I give away to anyone interested in knotting.
