Rope cutter for shaft

I would like some advice on which rope cutter to install on my shaft. I have noticed that there are more and more crab pots in my sailing area. It is only a matter of time until I pick up a pot on my shaft. Any suggestions?

Re: Rope cutter for shaft

I had a set of Spurs on my powerboat for almost thirty years. Never got stopped by fouling the prop. I know I hit at least one rope as I saw pieces of it.

Make sure you can get a proper fit. Our geometry prevents any of them. Useful to have this aboard. It fits on the standard handle extensions.

Re: Rope cutter for shaft

According Jeffrey Siegel, from Active Captain, they do not work 50% of the time.

As a diver, he had to dive more often on boat with rope cutter to free the prop than on boat that did not had any. May be because when you do not have one, you paye more attention ?

Check one of his blog post about all this (sorry, cannot find it again).

Also, it seems even if you have one, you will need to dive to clear and free the prop at some point. And with the rope cutter installed, it will be bloody for your fingers. Not good.

Re: Rope cutter for shaft

In my experience, it depend on which shaft mounted line cutter you have, there are a few of them out there. The Shaft Shark saved me the hassle of going into 45 degree water. It can also be installed without removing prop in or out of water.
