Spot Connect GPS

Does anyone have experience of using a Spot Connect gps device, especially its ability to hook up with an I Phone to send text messages to land based connects. I am going offshore soon ( West coast USA) and am thinking about buying one. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks

Re: Spot Connect GPS

There's numerous CF discussions of "Spot".

Re: Spot Connect GPS

spot is great for reporting your position to friends and relatives and letting them know you're still alive. we started using it after our worry wart daughter hadn't heard from us in a few days and called the u.s. coast guard. at $100 for the device and $100 for one years service i think it's worth it.

for real offshore communication, get an iridium phone. friend of mine rented one for a few weeks when he went offshore and said it worked perfectly.

We have had a lot of problems with the "connect" model and the support sucks without a phone connection. Our hasn't worked more than it has.

Re: Spot Connect GPS

I have been using a spot with an iPhone for a while and am happy I have it, but it has not always been 100%.

There are new 2 way devices out now made by another company. I think I might move to that once my SPOT contract is up.

InReach

I have not compared contract and service prices yet.
