Ultra sound anti foul devices

I have the ultimate snake oil installation, coppercoat and 2 jaycar units, after 6 months just had a diver to clean the boat, didn't take him long said it was pretty good. Boat is in Canarias and previous ablative antifoul was very poor.
So to sum up, is it the ultrasonic or the coppercoat that's working, don't care as the boats clean!

Regards

Ab

that's a good response. I'm pretty sure I'm going Copper Coat too this year. I'm not at all convinced about the jaycar units though.

I don't believe that arrangement would provide accurate results. For instance, it may very well be that an ultrasonic device can keep a relatively small piece of metal clean, as the distance from the transducer will be very short and the area to be kept clean very small. But in a real world, boat-mounted situation, the device will be required to retard fouling at much greater distances and much larger surface areas. Your test will reveal nothing about how it would perform then.

Ok so here is a question I have
Haven't seen asked yet but what long term effects to frp from exposure to hi freq sound waves do you expect? I wonder if the effect of hi freq cycling my impact the life expectancy of Fiberglas.

I don't think there is anything to worry about in that regard. The amount of movement is negligible compared to all the other flexing that Fiberglas endures in the life of a boat.

I don't think the boat can hear it

Re: Ultra sound anti foul devices

Hi RC, FWIW we are using Altrex AF5, pretty easy to obtain in Oz. Slightly warmer water up here in Adelaide, but the boat had AF5 in Melbourne, Westernport, for years, which would be very similar in temperature at least, I should think.

Still very good clean bottom after 18 months, I only pulled the boat this year at about 19 months because the prop-speed had given up the ghost. We never do the diver-bottom cleaning thing, never had anything to scrub off, except a little fringe at the waterline. I suppose if we were racers we would give the bottom a light scour during the 18 months... dunno though... don't race.

More importantly, how is the great paint removal process going?

HI Matt,

Well, the paint removal process was a complete flop. You can read more about that below. Today they started cutting rust out if the toe rail and tomorrow will start welding the patches in. It will be sandblasted in a fortnight.
