A Combat of Devils by Keith Dovkants

This book, A Combat of Devils, by Keith Dovkants, is the best thing I've read in ages. It's the story of small sailing ships used as Q-ships during World War I against German submarines. An incredible story of sailors fighting U-boats from boats not all that different from ours, with guns and depth charges cobbled onto their decks. It's beautifully written, something like Patrick O'Brian, with a host of interesting characters. I literally couldn't put it down, and would have read it in a single sitting if I had not been interrupted by an undelayable business meeting.

Combat of Devils: Keith Dovkants: 9781780882024: Amazon.com: Books

If you're looking for something to read which is sailing-related - you won't regret picking this up. The only bad thing is that the author, a professional journalist, has only written this one book so far

Sounds interesting, have ordered it. Used Book Depository, as they have free worldwide shipping.
Thanks,
Richard.

Thanks,

Was going to order a copy and tried to find the Used Book Depository but google came up with dozens of sites, most used Bibles so probably not the same place. Do you have a link to the one you're referring to?

PS
Thanks Dockhead for the suggestion. Have read books in the past about the Q-ships and found the subject very interesting.

Sorry, my message was confusing. I should have said that I used
< bookdepository.co.uk > I think it was just over $10.00 with free postage which is important if you live Down Under!

Regards,
Richard.

Thanks Richard. Your post wasn't really confusing, just not enough information for the ignorant like myself to track down the source. With free postage should be a good source even if you're just across the pond as well as for you blokes down under.

Did you guys find and read it? I'm reading it for a second time and enjoying it even more than the first time.

Bought it on Amazon for my Kindle.

Kindle says I'm 36% of the way through, not a sailboat in sight so far, no boats "just like ours" yet.

Should I persevere? I find the narrative style somewhat too introspective and a little turgid. I haven't yet engaged with the characters enough to care what happens to them.

I'll persevere if there's some sailing. Is there?
