Trading Boats

Boat transformations to air on Trading Spaces program

Trading Spaces: Family — a spin-off of the cable series Trading Spaces on The Learning Channel — is airing its first nautical episode Friday at 7 p.m. (EST) and Sunday at 10 a.m. (EST).

The show contacted the National Marine Manufacturers Association to help locate families for this nautical edition, taped at the Harborage Marina in St. Petersburg, Fla. Fliers were distributed at last September’s Tampa Boat Show to help locate participants.

The boat owners selected to participate are Capt. Calvin Tate and Pat Benavides, owners of a 33-year-old, 70-foot, custom-built house boat; and Angela and Nick Metro, who own a 19-year-old, 56-foot Matthews Motoryacht. Both families live dockside at the St. Petersburg Municipal Marina.

Trading Spaces: Family provides two neighboring families with $1,000 each, a professional designer, a carpenter and 48 hours to redo a room of their choice. Tate and Benavides had their salon transformed with the help of Trading Spaces designer Hildi Santo-Tomas. The Metros, who live aboard with their 18-month-old and 2-year-old, had their salon re-designed by Edward Walker.
