Re: Canadian Buying Boat in US (for Use in Bahamas, not Import)

My understanding of the law is if/when you decide to bring the boat back you will need a broker otherwise your boat will be impounded at customs until you can pay the tax/duty.
So, you must arrange to import your boat with the broker before hand so that you have the needed paperwork in hand.

This is true, somewhat. it costs around 500$? for the broker (its an import broker, not a yacht broker). He readies the paperwork. when you arrive and call canadian customs, they show up ready to take your credit card, this is when you pay the tax, not before. yes, you do have to pay the tax on the spot when you check in at your first port of call.

Re: Cruising Florida and Being Legal...

I purchased a boat in florida and did a coast guard vessel deletion and then registered the boat in canada, the boat never left florida. When I contacted the customs snd border patrol to obtain a cruising permit I was told to hire a customes broker to export the boat to canada first, when I asked if the boat has to leave the US he said no, this is a paperwork process. Any ideas to what the heck is he talking about, Thanks
