Re: Cruising Budget - Version 1000

take what you spend on land, subtract the house payment + the insurance and upkeep and HOA dues on house, subtract the car payments and insurance and gas and maintenance, subtract every other land-based cost (cable, phones, health clubs, etc...) and what's left is quite doable. And you don't have to live on ramon noodles either. I've done it before and plan to do it again as soon as I can get out of the mountains and back to the water.

And as my girlfriend said, it's like camping, but you get to take all your shoes with you!

Depends on the type of camping and how many shoes

Re: Cruising Budget - Version 1000

so I am looking at the spreadsheet again and figure it is time to revisit the question

I'm currently budgeting $2,000/mo for 2 people to cover everything! From that I figure it is a budget of $1750/mo to live/spend on cruising and $250/mo of maintenance on the boat.

Lets hear from more people. Post and discuss and criticize whatever you wish, but vote on the poll.

In the next couple years I have to talk the boss into this and I'm going to need data.

Re: Cruising Budget - Version 1000

I voted for $500. I'm alone, 67 and have only a SS retirement income. I get about $1200 per month. That will have to pay for all living expenses, maintenance and upgrades.

I don't have my boat yet. I am looking for one about 33 feet and that already has all the upgrades I'd like to have.

Re: Cruising Budget - Version 1000

first i don't think you can objectively have a cost poll without including the cost of the boat --

so given that we have published our cost for the last 5 years and they really varying depending on where you are --

on this forum go to http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ta-118781.html

everything is there and if you want to take our boat cost you can

Sure you can as this poll has 110 votes, which is pretty good response on CF.

Thanks for your cost posting on the other thread.

Re: Cruising Budget - Version 1000

I don't have my boat yet either. Yet I honestly have a hard time believing it'll cost me more then my current life does at $1300 a month!

My rent will be close to half, I won't drive to work and back 50 miles round trip (saving me $250 a month). I'll sell my car (keep my truck for supplies), That'll save me $40. I have NOT eaten at a restaurant or gone to a bar more then 3 times in the last 12 years. (That'll save me over $1300 a month by some of these "BOATING budgets"). Cable and internet will continue to cost about $80-$100 per month.

So, if I only buy $300 worth of food a month (about twice what I spend now). I'll vote for $1000 a month estimated. This will likely be a little high, but I like to put a little away every pay check.

Vance -- not sure if you looked at our 5 years of cost data or not but it lays it out fairly well for 2 people -- now we do a bit more upgrades but other wise boats are a lot more maintenance than a house or condo - not even including the dockage where you want to keep it --
depends a bit on how you plan to use the boat and that makes a bit of difference

good luck

Re: Cruising Budget - Version 1000

Hmm? Seems you add some extras. (This is roughly over the five years, added up and divided by 5).

Language learning=5%
Souvenirs=.5%
personal=2%
Family emergency=2.1%
Gifts??=1.4%
Hotels=2%
Medical=5%
Tips=nominal
Alcohol=5%
Clothing=1%
Computer=.5%
Donations=.01%
Fishing=1%

Add that up and roughly 25.5% of your "BOATING" budget is not boating related at all!

This thread says Repairs/Parts and Upgrades don't count. So, theere goes another 27.5% of your "Budget" when related to this thread.

So you ACTUALLY average about $1429.40 in ACTUAL boat related costs.

When I add up my monthly cost of living on land. I do not include Liqueur, or Clothing. A doctors visit is not a car repair, and can't be viewed AS a housing fee. If I need a new computer it isn't listed in my records as part of my rent. Nor is eating at a restaurant, or giving a fat tip.

If I DID my cost of living right now is $4000 a month! NOT the $1300 I reported earlier.

So, if I cut out all that unrelated stuff WE are pretty close to agreeing (about $400 off).
