Don't Believe What You See: Brokers in Greece

for a laugh I thought I would have a quick look online to see what the SO40 market was like and to see how many boats I recognise from when I was looking last Autumn.

Shock horror, I found my boat still listed. The previous owner had removed his ad and so too had the Greek broker who he had contacted.

But there is another broker in Greece listing the boat. I had heard from someone that this broker would take boats listed by other brokers or owners and list them on his site. When I was looking, I was always annoyed that he had only 1 photo and limited information on boats and that you had to contacted him, but after hearing how he works I was no longer surprised at what he was doing.

I'm not sure whether to "out" the broker here so people know not to waste their time. I will say that he does advertise in a few British yacht mags (no boat details)

If anyone is looking to buy in Greece, send me a PM and I can tell you who it is.

I will probably write the broker soon, but wonder if I should also contact Yachtworld

I think it is pretty "normal" practice with brokers to pad out there brokerage listings.

I'm thinking of buying in Greece and would be interested in which broker it is.

Thanks.

Moderators note:

hoppy,
In the context you describe, we do not allow the "outing" of people in this forum (or any other type of outing for that matter).

As you know there are always two sides to a story. Additionally, there are too many problems associated with attacking ones business or an individual when a members feels that they have been wronged by a business transaction. As much as a member might feel that others need to be warned about a seemingly less than ethical individual, we cannot allow this here. There are other forums that do allow attacks on businesses and individuals.

I realize you have not outed anyone. This is a proactive informational post so that other members understand the forum policy.

I wonder if the 'Yacht Brokers Course' that someone was trying to sell on here the other week included instruction on how to sucessfully utilise PhotoShop......

The tried-and-true "bait and switch."

The name on the boom cover on my boat was photoshopped off, so obvious this particular broker has done that part of the course

I sent a pm to usgreek, so he is now informed.

I have been a bit lazy and still have not contacted the broker.

Re: Don't Believe What You See: Brokers in Greece

Might be worth an e mail to Yachtworld, that a member isn't playing by the rules. They are an English company just down the road from me so probably interested to hear about this.

After all legitimate brokers will be paying for the advertising on Yachtworld.

Re: Don't Believe What You See: Brokers in Greece

I have just pull my finger out and sent a message to the broker. If the boat disappears from his site and yachtworld in the next couple of days, I'll leave it at that.
