Flag Registration Canada vs UK

Hi,
I’m Canadian, living in UK, have both citizenships. I understand that if I buy a boat I can register it in Canada or UK, is this correct? Which will give me the flag as well.
Any advice on which flag will be preferable? I plan to sail in North Europe, south UK first, later maybe in Mediterranean, the dream to cross the pond and enjoy Caribbean.
Will flag effect insurance, future sale of the boat or anything else?
Thank you for advice.

If you flag it Canadian there is no taxes due on the boat unless it returns to Canadian waters - and then they are immediately due and payable.

Either one.. your boat will be limited to 18mths then have to remove it from EU waters and return with proof of such (marina bill, entry/Exit stamp) as proof which then give the boat another 18mths in EU waters.
You however will be limited to 90 days in, 90 days out with either passport.

Re: Flag Registration Canada vs UK

Thank you for replies. I’m now clear about 18 months in EU.

About boat:
As a UK resident, if I do register it in Canada as Canadian, will I still need to pay VAT upon arrival to UK? I guess flag does not matter to tax and if I pay tax in UK I need to pay for boat too.

About me:
Can I stay in EU for 90 days on one passport, leave, and come back right away on another passport? And keep doing it?

If you're buying the boat in Canada you will, as a UK resident be liable for VAT and will have to have it surveyed to check for UK compliance and if not, have any compliance work done.
If buying the boat in the UK, if second hand there is no VAT.
As for coming and going on two passports I would exercise caution and seek more qualified advice than any you may get on CF from folk not taking the possible risk..

If you register it in Canada you will not be able to get insurance! Canadian companies will not insure in the UK Ireland or the continent. And UK etc will not insure a Canadian boat. Ask us how we know. So reg't in UK.

I am asking. I just insured (three weeks ago) my Canadian registered Lagoon 380 in UK (Edwards Williams) through a Florida broker.

Re: Flag Registration Canada vs UK

Owned our boat for 30 years. Had been insured with the same company for 20 years. Sailed to Ireland in 2012 Insurance cancelled by the company as they were unable to insure offshore or foreign managed Insurance in Ireland. Then Brexit. Unable to get coverage from anyone UK Europe Canada or US as no one. would insure us. Managed to get insured with a Canadian Co in BC through a company in the UK Then that coverage was withdrawn after a year because it was too much trouble for them to continue. When we had it the coverage was awful.
If you got coverage that's grand maybe things have improved. Hope so but we're now back in Canada so we're good unless they start refusing because of age.
