German wants to buy a boat from Canadian in US

I am German resident and want to buy a boat from a Canadian, who has the boat currently in the US (Maryland).


He thinks, that he cannot sell me the boat without a broker, since he had not imported the boat in the US (which would be just a matter of paperwork since the boat was built in the US). Is that true? Does he need a broker to sell me the boat, if its not imported?


Would be nice, if you could give me some links, so that I can convince him (if right). Thank you!

Hi Henno,

You definitely don't need a broker, but an attorney experienced in boat sales and maritime issues might be a good idea. And btw, if a broker is retained, the seller traditionally pays the commission.
