Haven't read Kerouac since the early sixties (when I was "into it").
A Sailing story the Kerouac way.

I was sitting in the cockpit just having smoked one of natures best things when this cat walked up and started talking to me. He asked if I had a cup of beans and a little rice to cook with it. I always wanting to be giving and able to help a groovy individual out lent a helping hand as would any other in that position would.
London was damp and foggy but that was cool because I was in San Francisco and life is Good !
I am a Mark Twain Mo Fo !

But seriously if you are still interested in sailing the world. The best thing I could advise is go to school and get a BA in teaching. There are positions all over the world teaching the English language.

Definitely, anybody with no/little experience should go on at least one extended offshore passage prior to ever thinking about committing to a RTW.

The simple reason is that there can be a HUGE difference between dreaming about doing (anything) and actually doing the thing.

Dream on, go do some serious sailing and, if you still like it, go for your big adventure.

Now thats some good advise! but I dont belive that a cat talked to you as I have seen only one cat that could talk and he said most cats will never talk to a total stranger...are you sure it wasnt a dog ?Dogs will talk to strangers but not cats and I know this to be a fact...wonder if we have run this young person off from sailing yet?hope not..the first step to making dreams come true is to wake up...DVC

I agree with Martin...Get your High School Diploma, which is what you will need to join the Coast Guard. Last I heard the sign up Bonus was $30,000. That will buy you a good boat.
You can bargain for what schooling you want before you join. Four years in the Coast Guard will help prepare you for what you want to do.

Interesting...I would not have taken it with a grain of salt until I toured the USS Hornet this last weekend and realized that I missed my calling when I was young. I can see how joining a service can mature you quicker. save money if you're smart and travel for free as well as learn a trade. I did learn how to party though
