I'm rejected. NEED Insurance

I just purchased a pristine 1982 Morgan OI 416 and went to the BoatUS site for insurance and was immediately rejected.

I have 23 years of sailing experience, numerous documented sail training education programs in my resume, have owned 3 (smaller) boats and never had to file a claim and the boat is not in or going to the prime "hurricane" areas.

When I called to inquire why I was told that Geico "no longer insures boats of that age or "length."

SO...... I NEED some recommendations. And soon please.

Thank you in advance. ~Ed

Same story here, would love to hear what you find out. 1974 boat myself and I'm either too old, too small, too big, too liveaboard or in the wrong part of the world.

The refusal occurred before I was even able to request any specific coverage.

Welcome to the Morgan Out Island club. Insurance can be a challenge as our boats get older (mine is a 1978) Keep shopping around, its all you can do.

Every other thread here. The same story. Coverage is being lost for a lot of people. Yet, insurance is more and more mandatory everywhere you go. Somethings Gotta give.

They did you a favor. Geico sucks. Once they took over BoatUS insurance they buried a horrible depreciation in the fine print. I have no idea why anyone would insure anything with Geico.

Do a search of the forums. This topic comes up twice a week, and there are links to marine insurance companies.

Re: I'm rejected. NEED Insurance

Hi, FernleyE,
I am working out insurance myself, so have been taking notes from the recent insurance challenge threads. It is going to depend on where you are, where you want to use the boat, what kind of insurance you want, and the age of the boat among other things. Also, it is going to require some digital leg work, though maybe you can find a good broker that does the let work for you. Here are my notes, still early in the process:

Re: I'm rejected. NEED Insurance

Will your auto/home insurer just do it? Especially for liability only I have had good luck with that, but it's been a few years. They have a vested interest in finding you something, even if it's a side insurer..

Right now I'm grandfathered in with Geico / BoatUS, but in calling around I typically get told "no" even before I request the level of coverage, so I'm not sure it makes a difference?

Re: I'm rejected. NEED Insurance

Something similar happened around the 80's-90's with farm insurance. (Hint: Any company with the letters "farm" in the name will drop you in a heartbeat if they learn that you have anything to do with a farm. And so will anyone else.

The national Farm Bureau ended up forming its own insurance company. They are currently insuring my boat, but IDK what will happen when I scale back the farm insurance on retiring (later this month.) Or try to switch boats/cruising areas. IDK who the underlying underwriter is for that coverage.

Re: I'm rejected. NEED Insurance

Latest reason for rejection is the jump in size from previously owned boats. My biggest is the current on at 25'.

Emphasis on, "owned." Apparently have sailed/ raced Larger boats for several years is not relevant
