Import to Italy

Hi,

I am Austrian and bought a ship in Italy which was built in Taiwan in 1983. The previous owner has a dual Italian/UK passport and never imported the vessel into the EU. The vessel was registered in the Isle of Man but appears to have been deregistered for many years (the deregistration is dated 2014). Although the ship is ashore, it is difficult to prove when it arrived. However, I am happy to pay tax as the price was "only" 20,000 but I can't find a way to start the process. Does anyone have any advice on how I can do this or even better who can do it for me (the broker had no idea how this could work).

Thanks Wolfgang

Re: Import to Italy

Is it not the case that boats built before 1985 are VAT exempt?

Re: Import to Italy

Thank you for the reply and the apreciated advise. As I understand the current situation this exceptuon is not longer applicable and every EU citizen has to pay tax for his leasure vessel regardless the age and the vessel's location (it seems like there is an exception for new boats when they immediately leave the EU once there are completed but I did not investigate further because it is not applicable for me anyhow).

However, after 6 months investigation I have accepted that I need to pay import tax but I am struggling to find a way HOW 🤔 due to the boat is in Italy I have to settle it there (but I can register the boat in Austria or other EU countries).

I already contacted the Autrian authorities (and the Germans), several Leasing companies and some brokers but all conversations ended by the advise to pay tax in Italy but no-one knows where and how?

Cheers Wolfgang

I would suggest exactly this: Ask at the source, in this case customs office. Ask in the place where the boat is stored where the nearest customs office is, then go there in person and ask. They will give you a list of nearby agents you could work with. If you don't speak italian, try to take someone who does, this will make it a lot easier.
