We made the mistake of saying we based our boat out of FL one year and our insurance rates went through the roof. Even though we moved the boat out of FL they never went back down. Now we have an insurance company through a broker friend in NC which is half the price and says it will even pay shipping costs for engine parts. We're going to test them because we've been back onboard for 4 days and the batteries are crap, looks like the alternator is likewise and the morning of the day we arrived (according to eye witnesses) the blades of our wind generator parted with the housing and landed in the cockpit. But hey we're lucky it could have landed in the drink.

I have a 40' boat, 25 years old. I pay almost exactly 1% of the insured value of the boat. I have, from memory $500 excess, but I may be wrong.
