Need some advice from people with boats over 30 years old-- need to find Insurance that is AFFORDABLE... The boat is a 44' Ketch in the Galveston Bay area... Having a tuff time finding anything with an under a $300 a month insurance payment... Am I looking for a Unicorn?

Thank you in advance!!!

I want to cover the entire boat value... I does not make sense on making a life-time purchase only to loose it in a bastard storm... We will simply eat less, and down-size lifestyle somehow until we get the heck out of the highest insurance zone here on the Texas Gulf Coast. Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions...

It can be rough getting ins. on a boat bilt before 1980! My suggestion is try some of the brokers that cover the local shrimper fleet! We use a broker localy on a 1980 boat. But then all we carry is liabilty, and comp. We had no problems you might try a local guy maybe??

Try Boat Insurance, a broker in Seattle. I have a 1973 Grand Banks and I pay about $800 a year, on 45k coverage and 500k liability.

Puddle Jumper, the rate you are quoted will be based on your experience, past ownership, credentials, possible discounts for SSCA or USPowerSquadron membership, plus the age of the boat, the time you have in similar boats, your location, the age and value of the boat, and the phase of the moon.

Reasonable? A lot depends on all the things we don't know from that list.

You might try Al Golden at IMIS. They're not always the cheapest and they're candid about that. They are professionals though, and competitive, and if you think you can do better elsewhere they can often point out what's been quietly missing from the other policy, which often really isn't cheaper.

Re: Insurance on GULF COAST: Boats over 30+years ONLY

from our experience - we sail a 2001 Jeanneau DS40 that we bought new - and it is our first and only boat - and had limited experience sailing - but we lived in miami - the price is close to right depending on the value of the boat -- problem is those pesky named storms --

when we cut the dock lines and got our of the hurricane zone for hurricane season our insurance went more than in half -- our agent Bill Hodgens of Yachtinsure dot com did a great job for us and moved us from company to company and area we could sail to keep our premiums as low as possible when we were in miami but companies simpy do not like those named storms

then we did a 2 handed crossing of the atlantic -- went up again

just our thoughts and opinions

Another plug
For Imis
They rep many companies and can often cover older, larger boats via Markel if you have enough experience in boats of that size
