Re: Insurance - survey impossible due to location

Ushuaia doesn't have builders, it doesn't have anything except a few hardware stores. Besides I can't go there as I have a pirate passport.. according to them and don't want to deal with that can of worms. second catch 22 on that is that I would need insurance to go to Ushuaia for the survey to get insurance. hmmmmm

I'll check IMIS thanks for that.

Yes contacted the survey companies and they are adamant that a survey is necessary. Contacted various associations of surveyors to try and find out if one is in the are by chance, but no such luck. Think the closest was in Valpariso.

I did try the self survey thing but the are not interested even though without sticking my neck out I could show many accredited surveyors a thing or too and have the CV to prove it. That is one of the things that really gets me with this. I have a track record that is verifiable in preparing boats for the harshest environments but the insurance companies will only accept a survey from a surveyor who has never seen a storm!

Good replies though, thanks everyone

I've just insured with Topsail, UK.
Excellent to deal with, no survey required, very competitive premium!

I have a Yachtsmans travel insurance policy with TopSail but their underwriters were afraid of my location it seems, despite it being my backyard! They don't seem to take account of individual circumstances and work to a formula!

Re: Insurance - survey impossible due to location

It seems that you are probably only interested in a liability rider - not increased hull insurance. Won't your provider or others provide this? Any previous survey should suffice for that.

No previous insurance, like many blue water cruisers, and no previous survey. I think the last time this boat was surveyed was for it's entry to French registry in the 1980s !!

I have never needed, or wanted, insurance before. Now I need it! no choice must have it, or fake it!

Have you heard of Google spiders? It is a service where your ISP number and the words" fake it" are sold to your insurance company, and the approximate district attorney.

Re: Insurance - survey impossible due to location

I only have a third party insurance. =(damage I cause to others is covered)
As well as accidents on board and towing and salvage. This for approximately 350$ a year but limited to Europe. (28ft boat) You can also get full coverage from the same company: http://www.paullortye.nl/index.php?lang=en
It's a dutch company and I"m happy with the service.

They only require a survey if you want to insure for damage to your own boat.

I'm assuming you only need an insurance that covers damage to others and salvage costs as I do?
