Insurance vs renting a boat

Hey,

I'm considering renting a yacht from my friend for a longer period of time (couple of months) and I'd like to pay him for this. AFAIU the problem is that boats that are being rented should be registered differently (at least in most countries) and hence are insured differently. Do you know if this is the same for this kind of one-time rental between friends? Are there are any easy ways to do this officially without breaking terms of conditions for the insurance?
