Since no one has mentioned them. My '79 O'Day is insured by Amica Mutual, Lincoln, RI. No claims but excellent price. No survey required.

Markel is great. I have world wide insurance with them and my boat is 43 years since initial launch.

My 1971 Cheoy Lee Clipper Ketch 36 is insured through Geico/ Boat US. Had no problem except for the amount they would pay out for comprehensive coverage.

I have Progressive on a 1985 and a 1980 boat. Agreed hull value and liability insurance.

We also use GEICO on a 1990 (30 year old boat). A fixed value at $50 K with a deductible of $5K. Cost $1K per year. We also carry a separate umbrella policy for liability of $3M. Cost $300.00 per year. Boat is behind a private residence and I think that makes a difference as well.

Re: Insurers for an older boat.

In that situation whoever you would use for house or car insurance would be your best bet. I use State Farm and they insured my 1975 Morgan. I am limited to USA, Canada, the Bahamas, and surrounding waters. Reasonable rates

The specialty marine insurers are mainly useful if you are going offshore.

Re: Insurers for an older boat.

I have my 35 year old sailboat with Ski Safe but no named storm coverage so you need a place to secure the boat when a named storm approaches. I had liability only before with Progressive.

Re: Insurers for an older boat.

I ran into insurance issues when trying to get a slip in Kemah/Seabrook Texas last year.

Almost all marinas (with the exception of my current marina) wanted a marine survey for any boats over 25 years old. [ Also NO steel or concrete hulled boats..]

My boat was built in 1984.

ALL marinas required a $300K liability policy.

Geico/Boats-US would NOT insure me even just for liability, without a survey.

I ended up with Progressive insurance. No survey was required for the $300K liability insurance policy. However if I wanted to insure for the boat's loss ( fire, sinks etc..) then a survey would be necessary.

Re: Insurers for an older boat.

I got Markel insurance through Over Sea Insurance out of San Diego. My boat was also from the 70s. They were pretty helpful finding a plan for a first time boat owner. Markel was the only company they work with who was willing to quote us though. I think mostly due to years of ownership. http://overseainsurance.com/

Re: Insurers for an older boat.

I am getting involved in an interesting project. The subject project boat is a 2 masted schooner and is very close in size to the schooner, Le Toumelin.

As such, Insurance is necessary to get into the boat yard to do a 1-3 year refit on a ferro-cement boat. Is it just liability? (3rd party liability). Any suggestions will be much appreciated as I have never needed a boat yard before.
For perspective;
https://www.ferrocement-ifs.com/uplo...lin-ci3411.pdf
Le Toumelin's hull length is 5 ft longer yet overall LeToumelin is 6' shorter.

Thanks to all for your good advises. I was able to get insurance through Allstate at a very good rate.

Fair winds and following seas to all!

Re: Insurers for an older boat.

I use Amica in CT & GA with a 1972 Cheoy Lee and no survey. Gowrie Insurance in Westbrook, CT has a division that specializes in boats including older ones and wooden boats. They have national coverage.

Geico, 1977 Islander. I’ve had a claim didn’t get booted or rate increase.
