Is This a Good Deal for Rope?

West Marine: West Marine Search Tool

I want some 1/4 in to use for various purposes.

What I have now cannot tolerate much sun.

Thanks,

I am looking for rope to cut up for various things like tarp, fenders etc that can hold up to the Florida sun. Preferably very low stretch.

Try Home Depot and other warehouse clubs, 1/4" nylon is a fraction of the price of West Marine.

Nylon will last a small fraction of the time Dacron (polyester) does in the sun, , and will stretch many times as much. Polypropelene won't stretch as much as nylon, but it goes away even faster in the sun.

Actually there are several ropes on a boat (e.g. Boltrope). Plus it is all rope until you cut it.

I think that is the junk I have. And I have never bought any rope at HD that was anything like "real" rope. Maybe the new CEO has changed that too.

I have a few bits of 1/8 in that is 15 years old. I replaced it with this shiny new stuff that slips badly, wears poorly and just seems like junk. This was bought at a local marine supply place too. Junk. I wish I could find the old stuff as I don't even know what it is or who made it.

I want something that will hold up under the Florida SUN.

Polyester is what I want, right Don?........thanks.

I've got some decent rope out of Canada that was double braid Dacron. If you can over size it, you make up for the stretch of say Stay Set vs Stay SetX. It was a looser braid than the good stuff but half the price. If you watch eBay you can get some god deals but not all deals are great. The WM sale price (best they ever had) is about normal for the the other places on the Internet. If you want New England or Sampson you can shop around and still do better.

Thanks P,

getting somewhere now.
I don't know or care about the brand name, only the quality of the rope.
Is that another hand in hand thing?
I don't want to bring up "if the rope is made in the far East" type of thing.

Check out this Ebay store---Discount Rope and Line--- the seller is called--roscoef.
He has great deals on name brand line. Go to Ebay and do a search with the above names and you should find him. You won't be disapointed.
